Chapter 32: Ayla

Emma arrived a couple of hours later. I had only needed her as a nurse for about a week, but we got along so well that we quickly became friends. We didn’t have much planned for the evening, but that was kind of the point. We just wanted to sit around and have some drinks and girl talk. It was something | hadn’t had much of in my life, and I was excited.

We were settled on the back porch in the lounge chairs with a pitcher of whatever c***tail Emma had made up when Kingston and Pierce made it to that side of the house.

“Not that I mind watching our hunky Alpha and Beta working with power tools, but what is all that about?” she asked, pointing to the two men finagling a latter on the incline so they could drill the cameras in place.

“Oh, they’re just updating the security system,” I said. “Kingston thought it was a good idea since we’ve been staying here so long.”

I wasn’t going to tell her about the whole stalker situation.

“So, any fun plans for the weekend?” Emma asked.

I took a breath and smiled. “Actually, Kingston is bringing me into the pack tomorrow.”

“What?” Emma shot up in her chair. “I thought he wanted to do the big ceremony thing?”

“Yeah, I told him I didn’t want that. Besides, it would take too long to get that planned,” I said. “And since I’m off the

“Wait, wait, wait,” Emma said. “An internship?”

I nodded. “Kingston reached out to the publisher of Second Story Publishing. She’s going to train me to take over when she retires.”

“Damn, girl,” Emma said excitedly. “You work fast.”

I laughed. “It’s all Kingston’s doing, really.”

“You impress everybody, and you know it,” she teased.

I rolled my eyes. Not everyone, apparently. Not the one person that mattered the most.

I shook my head, not knowing where that thought had come from.

“I hope these are all good things for you, Ayla,” Emma said. “I know you’ve been through a lot. Hopefully, this will be the fresh start you deserve.”
