Chapter 26

Chapter 26.

Emily’s POV.

I awoke to the early morning sun streaming through the window, its rays hitting me in the eyes. I let out a hiss of pain as I realized I hadn’t closed the curtains.

“Kex,” I called out, turning in the bed. But he was nowhere to be found. I felt a pang of panic as I realized he was gone. The room was silent, the air still. I sat up, my heart pounding in my chest. Where was he?

I rushed to my feet, my bare feet slipping into my slippers as I hurried to the door.

“Kex,” I called out, my voice trembling. I wrapped my gown tightly around me as I stepped into the hall. “Kex!” I screamed, my voice echoing down the empty corridor.

A guard rounded the corner, his eyes wide with alarm. “Have you seen Kex?” I asked,

voice breathless.

“Yes, he’s in Lady Nelly’s room,” the guard replied, his face impassive.

My hands flew to his cheeks, and he looked up at me in surprise, his eyes wide.

“How dare you refer to Nelly as Lady Nelly?” I spat, my voice trembling with rage. “She’s nothing but a bed warmer, and you will address her by her name!” I continued, my voice rising.

The guard’s gaze dropped to the floor, his face impassive. “Yes, ma’am,” he said, his voice barely audible.

I could see his knuckles whiten as he gripped his spear, his body rigid with tension.

I straightened my spine, my head held high, as I moved forward. “I am the only lady in this pack,” I said, my voice ringing with authority as I walked away.
